Entry & ID

Is the drinking age really 21 in Bali, and do clubs check ID?

Plan on 21+ for alcohol, and check the separate admission policy for your venue. Savaya explicitly requires guests to be at least 21 and present valid photo ID. A venue admitting younger guests does not make alcohol available to them legally. Bring identification that the venue accepts; do not assume a phone photo will be enough. Ask before travelling if you are unsure about your document. Entry rules can also vary for special events, and a reservation or prepaid table does not override them.

I'm 18–20. Which Bali nightlife experiences can I enjoy?

Look for restaurants with live music, sunset dining and daytime beach venues whose published admission policy allows your age group. Contact the venue before paying for tickets or a daybed, especially when a restaurant becomes a restricted club later in the evening. Savaya is strictly 21+, while other venues set their own entry limits. Choose alcohol-free drinks if you are under 21. Reports that someone entered without being checked are not a reliable booking plan, and CII does not recommend bypassing age or ID checks.

What should I wear to a Bali beach club or nightclub?

For a beach-club day, pack proper swimwear, a cover-up and footwear. For a nightclub, check its own smart-casual rules rather than assuming beachwear is accepted after dark. Pool and restaurant dress codes may be different within the same property. FINNS permits burkinis in its pools but requires swimwear, and has specific restrictions on beer-branded clothing and face or head tattoos. Those are venue rules, not island-wide rules. Ask directly about any clothing, accessibility or religious requirements before booking so there are no surprises at the entrance.

Bookings & Budget

Do I need to book a daybed or cabana, and is beach-club entry free?

Entry, seating and food-and-drink credit are three separate things. La Brisa offers free entry with minimum spending on selected premium seats; FINNS uses paid bed bookings rather than a general minimum-spend requirement. Potato Head currently has a sunset cover charge from 4–6:30 pm, redeemable for selected drinks, while other times can be free outside special events. Reserve early if a particular seat matters. Before paying, check the arrival deadline, credit included, taxes, weather policy and cancellation terms. Walk-in entry never guarantees your preferred bed or poolside position.

How much should I budget for drinks and a beach-club day?

Build your budget from the venue's current menu and your seating choice. A beachfront table, several cocktails, meals and transport can make a premium beach-club day considerably more expensive than a casual bar visit. Prices marked ++ have service charges and government tax added; use the percentage on that menu rather than assuming one universal rate. As a reference, Sundays' June 2026 menu lists an additional 21%. Keep ticket or bed fees separate from redeemable credit, and check which purchases count towards that credit before comparing packages.

Is Savaya or a VIP table worth the money?

Choose by the artist, view and kind of evening you want. A ticket may be enough if you mainly want to dance; a table can make sense when your group values reserved seating and plans to spend on food or bottles. Ask for the total cost, capacity, sightline, included admission, redeemable credit and any arrival deadline in writing. Savaya's general-admission tickets are primarily standing tickets, with limited shared seating. Compare the full group cost per person, including transport, rather than treating every VIP package as equivalent.

Can I bring duty-free alcohol into Indonesia?

Indonesian Customs currently allows up to one litre of alcoholic drinks per arriving passenger aged 21 or over under the passenger excise allowance. The allowance applies to Indonesia, not just Bali. Check the official customs guidance before departure and declare your goods accurately; do not plan around reports of unchecked bags or assume extra bottles can simply be taxed on arrival. Duty-free shopping is optional, and airport prices are not always the cheapest. Outside alcohol also does not automatically become acceptable at a beach club, bar or hotel.

Timing & Seasons

What time do Bali beach clubs and nightclubs close?

Think of Bali as several overlapping schedules: a daytime beach club, sunset drinks and a later indoor dance floor. FINNS publishes daily hours of 11 am to midnight, while special events can differ. Dedicated music events may continue later: check the specific dated listing rather than relying on a generic map entry. A venue's opening time is not necessarily the headline DJ's set time. Confirm last entry, closing time and transport before setting out, and leave room for changes caused by holidays, private bookings or local restrictions.

What closes during Nyepi, and can I go out the night before?

Nyepi is Bali's Day of Silence, observed by visitors as well as residents. Plan to remain within your accommodation during the 24-hour observance; normal road travel, entertainment and airport operations stop, with emergency exceptions. Ask your hotel about meals, lighting and internet arrangements, and arrange supplies and transfers beforehand. The preceding evening can include Ogoh-ogoh processions and road closures. Attend respectfully and follow local directions. Confirm your year's official date and transport notices before booking flights or boats; a normal club timetable does not apply during Nyepi.

Do beach clubs stay open in the rain, and is the wet season quiet?

Some venues keep their covered bars and restaurants running through ordinary rain, but pools, outdoor performances and beach access may be affected by conditions. Rain does not automatically mean a refund: read the terms for your exact booking before paying. Choose a venue with an indoor alternative if the forecast looks unsettled, and check BMKG's local warnings before travelling. Crowd levels depend on the event and holidays as much as the season. A wet-season visit can still work well if you keep the day's schedule flexible.

Areas & Places

Kuta, Legian, Seminyak, Canggu or Uluwatu: where should I stay for nightlife?

Start with the places you most want to visit. Canggu suits a beach-club and bar itinerary; Seminyak combines established nightlife with restaurants and sunset venues. Uluwatu works well for a clifftop venue or headline event, but plan the return journey because destinations are spread out. Kuta and Legian still offer bars and entertainment, so judge the actual venues rather than old party-capital labels. Pick accommodation near your main evening destination and check the real walking route. Trying to cover several distant areas in one night often means spending more time travelling.

Is there nightlife in Ubud, Sanur, Nusa Dua or Jimbaran?

Yes, but plan around a particular restaurant, live performance or lounge instead of expecting every area to offer a dense club circuit. Ubud and Sanur are useful starting points for live music and relaxed bars; Nusa Dua has resort-based options. Jimbaran is a natural choice for a sunset meal or a visit to Rock Bar, while AYANA's After Rock offers a later lounge option. Check the day's programme and reservation policy. These areas can suit an evening out without requiring a trip to a major dance club.

How do I choose between Bali's beach clubs?

Choose the experience first: a busy pool party, music-focused evening, relaxed sunset seat or a day on the sand. FINNS puts the party at the centre; Potato Head pairs its beach setting with a wider music and creative programme; La Brisa offers an Echo Beach setting with several seating options. Sundays has beach access and day passes, while Savaya is a clifftop event venue. Then compare admission, shade, swimming facilities, age policy and the current line-up. A sea view does not necessarily mean direct beach access, and a daybed is not always required.

Where can LGBTQ+ travellers find nightlife in Bali?

Jalan Camplung Tanduk in Seminyak is a useful starting point for venues such as Bali Joe and Mixwell, with cabaret and social nightlife. Check each venue's current programme and self-description. Bali's tourist nightlife should not be treated as representative of every Indonesian destination: laws, attitudes and risks vary, and official advice documents discrimination and arrests around some LGBTQ+ events. Be thoughtful about public affection and posting other guests' photographs. For travel beyond Bali, read destination-specific official advice, especially for Aceh.

Music & Events

Which nights are best for clubs in Canggu and Seminyak?

Use this week's line-ups instead of an old Monday-to-Sunday party map. The same venue can feel completely different for a resident night, guest DJ or private event. Desa Kitsuné publishes weekly and special events, and Potato Head lists dated Klymax nights with artists and times. First choose the music, then check the ticket, entry deadline and location. Confirm again on the day through the venue's official channel. That approach is more useful than assuming a famous weekly party still runs on the same night all year.

Where should I look for house and techno in Bali?

Start with the artist and promoter, then the venue. Klymax at Potato Head and Desa Kitsuné publish programmes worth checking for selector-led electronic nights; Savaya's dated line-ups can help if you want a larger headline event. A venue may move between house, disco, techno and open-format music depending on the booking, so genre tags are a starting point rather than a promise. Listen to a recent set from the announced DJ before buying a ticket. For smaller parties, verify the organiser, location and ticket channel through an official page.

How should I choose a New Year's Eve party in Bali?

Choose the music and neighbourhood before choosing a ticket tier. A big beach-club celebration, a clifftop headline show and a restaurant countdown are different evenings with very different budgets. Use the organiser's official booking channel and check whether food, drinks, seating and re-entry are included. Stay nearby if possible and plan a confirmed ride home; do not depend on finding a cheap car immediately after midnight. Outdoor celebrations also need a weather backup. Old New Year's posters are not evidence of this year's line-up, dates or inclusions.

Which music festivals should I look for, and is Ultra Bali confirmed?

Use a current organiser announcement before treating any festival as upcoming. Indonesia has both destination parties in Bali and major city festivals; for example, Djakarta Warehouse Project's official 2026 page lists a Jakarta edition. A familiar festival name or a previous Bali poster does not guarantee a return this year. We have not independently confirmed a new Ultra Bali edition for this guide, so it should not be booked from an old listing. For every event, check the year, exact venue, age limit, authorised seller and cancellation terms.

Safety & Local Rules

Is methanol poisoning a real risk in Bali, and is arak safe?

Yes. Official travel advice reports serious illness and deaths from contaminated alcohol in Indonesia, including drinks sold in licensed venues. Taste, smell, price or a familiar brand label cannot prove a drink is safe. Avoid unlabelled spirits and suspect cheap or free drinks; sealed products from reputable suppliers can reduce risk but are not a guarantee. Do not treat all arak as safe or all arak as contaminated. If someone becomes unwell after drinking, especially with visual disturbance or breathing problems, seek urgent medical help and mention possible methanol exposure.

What precautions should I take against drink spiking?

Keep your drink with you, watch it being prepared and decline unexpected drinks from strangers. A famous venue or busy crowd cannot remove the risk. If you suddenly feel unusually unwell or disoriented, tell a trusted companion and venue staff, stop drinking and get medical help promptly. Stay with the affected person and do not let an unknown person take them away. Keep any relevant booking or payment details for a later report. We do not use social-media anecdotes to rank venues as safe or claim how common spiking is.

What should I know about drugs, cannabis and mushroom products in Indonesia?

Do not buy, carry or use illegal drugs in Indonesia. Penalties can include long prison terms and, for some offences, the death penalty. Cannabis products including CBD and medicinal cannabis are illegal, and a foreign prescription does not make them permitted. Magic mushrooms are also illegal even where sellers offer them openly. For essential medication, check its status with Indonesian authorities before travel. An offer from a driver, bar or street seller is not evidence of legality. Do not accept unknown packages or agree to carry another person's substances.

Can I enjoy Bali nightlife as a solo woman traveller?

You can plan a social evening without joining a large group. Start somewhere staffed and easy to leave, such as a restaurant bar, a daytime beach venue or an organised activity that introduces people naturally. Keep control of your drinks and arrange the journey home before you go out. Share your plan with someone you trust and leave if attention feels unwelcome. Official travel advice notes risks of sexual assault, including in tourist areas; no venue can guarantee safety. You do not owe anyone a conversation, a drink or your accommodation details.

My phone has been lost or stolen. What should I do?

Ask venue staff about lost property, then use Apple Find My or Google's Find Hub to secure the device if those services were enabled. Contact your mobile provider and bank if the SIM or payment accounts could be misused. Report suspected theft to local police and request the documentation your insurer needs. Do not confront someone based on a map location, and be cautious of messages asking for passwords to recover the phone. Before a night out, keep a backup contact and your accommodation details somewhere other than the device.

What does Indonesia's new criminal code mean for unmarried visitors?

Do not assume tourists are exempt. Indonesia's revised criminal code includes penalties relating to cohabitation and sex outside marriage. Official Australian advice explains that authorities can act on a spouse's complaint for a married person, or a parent's or child's complaint for an unmarried person. Hotel check-in practice is separate from the law, so a room booking does not settle the legal question. Check your government's current Indonesia advice before travelling and get qualified Indonesian legal advice if your personal circumstances raise a concern. Avoid relying on social-media assurances.

Getting Around

How should I get home after a night out in Bali?

Arrange a registered taxi, an in-app car booking or a trusted pre-booked driver before the evening gets busy. Match the vehicle and driver to your booking and share the trip with someone you trust. Never drive or ride a scooter after drinking. Pickup arrangements differ between venues and neighbourhoods, so ask staff for the approved pickup point rather than wandering along a dark road looking for a cheaper fare. Save your accommodation address and allow extra time after a headline event. A clear return plan is particularly helpful for remote clifftop venues.

Beyond Bali

Which Jakarta areas should I explore for nightlife?

SCBD and Senopati are useful starting points for a club-and-cocktail itinerary, while Kemang offers bars and hotel venues such as Monopoli. Blok M and the northern PIK area provide other neighbourhood options. Pick a small cluster rather than crossing the city repeatedly in one evening. Check the venue's age and dress rules: The Cocktail Club in Senopati explicitly sets a 25+ admission policy. Budget for transport as well as any entry or first-drink charge. Assess individual venues rather than treating an entire district as safe or unsafe.

Does Jakarta nightlife close during Ramadan?

Expect significant changes and check the current year's local rules. Jakarta's 2026 guidance required closures for several entertainment categories, while some qualifying hotel or commercial-area venues had exceptions and restricted hours. That is not a reliable schedule for another year or another city. Before booking, ask the venue to confirm its exact dates, permitted hours and event status. Plan travel around busy evening periods and respect local observance. Do not assume Bali, Lombok or the Gilis follow Jakarta's rules, or that every tourist-area business remains unaffected.

Gili Trawangan, Gili Air or Lombok: which suits a nightlife trip?

Gili Trawangan is the strongest starting point if nightlife is a priority: Indonesia's tourism board describes a lively bar scene, with much of the island's visitor activity on the east side. Gili Air and Gili Meno suit a quieter stay. On mainland Lombok, choose your accommodation around the specific bars or social venues you want to visit rather than expecting the same density as Bali. Confirm party schedules locally and plan boats in daylight with a reputable operator. Religious observances and weather can change transport and opening arrangements.

Planning Your Night

I'm in my thirties or forties. Will Bali nightlife suit me?

Choose by music, seating and atmosphere rather than an assumed age bracket. A sunset bar, listening-focused club night or restaurant with live music can feel very different from a packed pool party. Read the programme and look at recent venue photos before booking; if conversation matters, ask about a quieter seating area. You can start with a relaxed early evening and decide later whether to continue. Bali's nightlife does not require drinking alcohol or staying out until dawn, and there is no single age profile across all venues.

How can I meet people through hostels, pub crawls or the Bali music scene?

Start with a hosted activity you would enjoy anyway: a hostel dinner, a group lesson, live music or a small event with a clear organiser. Ask your accommodation about current social events and compare what a pub-crawl ticket actually includes, including transport and the host's contact details. Official venue calendars can also lead you to recurring nights and local selectors. Meet new contacts in public and keep your own way home. You do not need to buy a table with strangers, join a private chat or drink heavily to take part.
